My Indigenous competency has been one of the most impactful learning experiences for me. Having Indigenous lands only across the river from where I grew up, but knowing next to nothing about it until my 20’s is a little bit shocking. Learning about the Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc peoples and their ways of life and knowing is an ongoing experience for me. From learning about the Anishinaabe in the East, to the Haida and the Bella Coola in the West in many of my English classes surrounding Indigenous literature, being able to learn about various ways of knowing has broadened my competency overall.
