Volunteer Work and Extra-Curriculars

McGowan Park Elementary Volunteer

Having my volunteer hours for the BEd program at McGowan Park Elementary was a really eye opening experience for me. With McGowan being my elementary school, I was able to reconnect with some of my teachers that still work there and ask them questions related to teaching. As I was still unsure about how fit I would be as a teacher, as soon as I started feeling more comfortable talking to students and understanding my role at the school as a volunteer, I felt like teaching could become more and more like my career path. I started asking more questions to the staff and to the teachers I grew close to growing up, and it was a really rewarding experience as this time felt like it set me on a positive course for my future.

Cosplay With Cassie

My best friend Cassie and I enjoy the hobby of cosplay. However, we both had to take time and patience to learn how to make each costume we made. Both Cassie and I had some background knowledge of sewing through high school, so we were able to bounce past knowledge off of each other. We each had to go through our own learning trial and errors of what worked and what didn’t, what materials worked, and if we needed special items. Thermoplastics were really fun to work with, but also really finicky as we could easily burn them with over use of our heat gun. We burned ourselves a lot, and taught each other different techniques of how to work with the thermoplastic. Cassie and I have gained lots of cosplay knowledge off of each other, just by bouncing teaching and learning practices off of one another.

Rotary Interact

I was a Rotary Interact member for a couple of years in high school.  A lot of this experience was based on learning for myself as it opened my eyes to different socioeconomics of living. Interact focused on making Kamloops a better place to live, so we picked up projects like Adopt-A-Road. During Adopt-A-Road, where we cleaned up a section of road, I was able to witness very different lifestyles of people. Not everyone is able to sustain themselves, so they have no choice but to try to survive on the streets. Some people simply took a wrong turn in life and are trying to make their way back up in society. Interact really opened my eyes and I was able to learn a lot about the varied lifestyles that people can live, and their stories.
