My teaching philosophy is rooted in inclusion, lifelong learning, and self-confidence. My goal is to teach in an inclusive and open learning environment, so all students feel safe and welcome to be there. Students should feel like they are in a safe space to open up free of judgement from peers and staff. It is my goal to have LGBTQIA+ students and Indigenous students feel confident in my classroom. By studying topics which focus on and units centered around Indigenous cultures, current LGBTQIA+ issues, topics, and many other social concerns, I can make my classroom a very diverse learning experience. My style is to introduce new discussions and topics slowly and safely to students, so they do not feel overwhelmed, and making sure that students get praised for moving out of their comfort zone. I have watched many students’ self-confidences soar when they are able to engage in socio-political conversations. Connecting with students around and their values, beliefs, and interests will also help them learn, grow, and flourish in their own way.

“Education is not to be viewed as something like filling a vessel with water but, rather, assisting a flower to grow in its own way.”
― Bertrand Russell (Russell, 1985)
